We help people who have errors on their credit report and get them fixed – quickly and for free! We are consumer attorneys helping clients under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Over 70% of credit reports contain an error, resulting in higher mortgage rates, interest rates and even lost job opportunities.
Credit Reporting Agencies such as Trans Union, Experian and Equifax frequently make mistakes on consumers’ credit reports. Chances are excellent that your credit report contains an error. Approximately 20% of these mistakes result in the denial of credit or a higher rate of interest. Some of the more common mistakes made by the credit reporting agencies include:
•Identity theft. This type of error is growing exponentially and may be the number one cause for credit reporting mistakes today.
•Mismerged information. This kind of error occurs between different people with the same name. For example, John A. Doe who lives in Montana may have his credit information placed on John A. Doe who lives in Florida. This is a very common mistake.
•Discrepancies amongst credit reporting agencies for the same debt. One credit reporting agency may report a debt as current while another might report it as delinquent.
•Delinquencies that are reported longer than 7 years. Derogatory credit information has to be removed from your credit report after seven years from the first delinquency. Sometimes a debt buyer or a collection agency “re-date” a date of last delinquency so that a derogatory stays on your credit report longer than seven years. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission hit NCO Financial Systems with a .5 million fine for doing this very thing. A delinquent debt may not be reported longer than 7 years on your credit report. Yet, in order to force you to pay the debt at some point, some collection agencies “re-date” the beginning date of the debt so that it stays on your credit report longer.
We can get errors removed from your credit report for free.
Using the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”), our credit repair lawyers can fix your credit for free. We will write the appropriate letter to the credit reporting agencies to get the item removed for you. If we are successful after writing a letter, you owe us nothing. The FCRA requires the defendants to pay your fees and costs and we look to them to do so. Of course, you can write a dispute letter to the credit reporting agencies yourself, but why would you want to when we will do it for free?
We can also get money from the credit reporting agencies for you.

If you believe there is an error on your credit report, be sure to submit a specific dispute with the proper bureau. Along with a letter describing the error, submit the incorrect report and highlight the disputed information. The bureau must start processing your dispute within a month of your submission. If a negative error is resolved, your credit score will improve.
Whether you are repairing your credit or just maintaining good credit, you must inspect your monthly credit card statements carefully. Obviously you want to catch and dispute any charges that seem wrong to you. Your dispute will go better the sooner you start it, so finding suspicious charges as soon as possible is very important.
An important tip to consider when working to repair your credit is the benefit it will have with your insurance. This is important because you could potentially save a lot more money on your auto, life, and home insurance. Normally, your insurance rates are based at least partially off of your credit score.
While you may be scared you will fall back into the credit card trap, avoiding the use of credit cards entirely does little to boost your credit score. Use each card for at least one purchase every month to keep the account active and reporting on your credit report. Carrying even a small balance and paying it off the next month may cost you a bit of interest, but is well worth showing your potential creditors that you make timely payments.
Bills should never be left unpaid long enough to generate late fees when one’s credit needs repair. Customers that incur late fees regularly are the ones that companies are most likely to make bad credit reports about. It is better to contact companies about bill payment problems than to ignore them. They will only get worse with time.
Consolidate many of your highest interest rate credit cards into one large balance with a lower interest rate. One possibility for doing this is to check a peer to peer lending site. These sites offer interest rates that bypass typical charges that you would incur with traditional banking, and allow other people just like you to fund your loan at a lower rate than a bank typically would.
Save the accounts that you are in good standing with regardless of your credit issues. If you have good standing accounts, you want to ensure that they remain that way as they are preventing your credit from lessening any further. You want to work on those accounts that are in default, but remember those that aren’t for maintaining your credit.
Make sure to make your payments on time when you subscribe to a phone service or a similar utility. Most phone companies ask you to pay a security deposit when you sign a contract with them. By making your payments on time, you can improve your credit score and get the deposit that you paid back.
Methods like these will help you repair your credit and learn to resist the temptations of easy money. Credit repair is not easy or fun, but it can be a learning experience. When you have conquered your personal credit crisis you can hold your head high and be confident of avoiding such pitfalls in the days ahead.
Your credit report. It’s not terribly exciting, but it could keep you from enjoying some of life’s most exciting milestones: Buying a car. Owning a home. Even getting a new job.
So it’s important to check in on your credit every once in a while. You want to know where you stand. And you also want to watch out for credit report errors.
To find and dispute errors on your credit report, you’ll first need to obtain a copy of it.
You’ll see a lot of websites and advertisements boasting free credit reports and scores. The only one that’s truly free, no strings attached? AnnualCreditReport.com.
By law, you’re entitled to a free copy of your report from each of the three credit bureaus each year. That’s TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.
Let’s say you get a copy of your report, and everything looks clean. Well, then you’re good to go! But what if you spot an error? Here’s what you should do.
Step two: Dispute errors. You’ll need to write a letter to the bureau telling them what information is inaccurate. You can find a sample letter on CreditCards.com.
Don’t use the online form provided by the bureau – it limits how much proof you can attach, and may require you to sign away some of your rights.
Here’s what your correspondence should include: Copies of documents that prove your claim. A clear identification of the error. State the facts, briefly and simply, and request a deletion or correction. You may also want to include a copy of your credit report.
Step three: Keep records. Once your letter is written, keep a copy. If you’re mailing it, send it certified and keep the receipt.
Once your letter is received, the bureaus have to reinvestigate the items in question, usually within 30 days. They’ll also notify the party holding the error. That might be a bank or lender, for example.
If there is an error, all credit bureaus will be notified, so your report can be updated. If your report’s been changed, you’ll get another free copy of it.
And, if your report is updated, you can request the bureaus to send correction notices to anyone who’s pulled your report in the past six months. If your dispute is denied, you may add a 100-word statement to your report, describing your side of the dispute.
It’s worth it to periodically check your credit report. If you do spot an error, you’ll want to tackle it as soon as you can. Kristin Wong, CreditCards.com. Video Rating: / 5
